San Marino is one of the smallest countries in the world, surrounded by Italy, and is said to be the world's oldest surviving republic.

The 2008 Contest in Belgrade would stage San Marino’s debut entry; alt-rock group Miodio, composed of Sammarinese and Italian band members. Their song, Complice, may have finished last in its Semi-Final but not before picking up two points from fellow aspirational minnows Andorra.

Since their debut, the 'Most Serene Republic' has qualified for the Grand Final on three occasions: Valentina Monetta (in 2014 with the Ralph Siegel produced track Maybe), Serhat (in 2019 with Say Na Na Na) and Senhit (in 2021 with the track Adrenalina).
