History
The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the longest running television shows in the world. It was on the 24th of May, 1956, that Europe saw the first ever Eurovision Song Contest. After 56 runnings, the contest is one of the most typical European traditions and without doubt, Europe's favourite TV show!

It all began 55 years ago on a 24th of May, just like today. Seven nations gathered in the Swiss resort of Lugano to take part in the very first Eurovision Song Contest, on a Thursday evening in 1956. The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg and Italy joined the host country in the first edition of what would become Europe's favourite TV-show.

After being one of the leaders of the team that won the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest with Lena's Satellite and the male host of the 2011 edition of Europe's favourite TV-show, the German entertainer Stefan Raab, announced he's ending his career in this aspect.

It was 23 years ago today that world famous superstar Céline Dion won the Eurovision Song Contest, singing Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi for Switzerland. It was only Switzerland's second victory, after they won the very first contest in 1956.

When Lena won last years Eurovision Song Contest for Germany with Satellite, it was only the second time in the history of the competition that the nation had won. Today, 29 years ago Germany registered their first win in 1982 with Nicole singing the Ralph Siegel & Bernd Menuinger composition Ein Bißchen Frieden, or A Little Peace as it would become known worldwide when released commercially.

Today marks the 33 year anniversary of Israel's first victory in the Eurovision Song Contest, in 1978. Although not considered to be one of the acts tipped to win, Izhar Cohen & Alphabeta romped home to victory with A-Ba-Ni-Bi and took the competition to their homeland the following year.
