Blanche

Blanche represented Belgium in the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest with the song City Lights.

Blanche (real name Ellie Delvaux) captured the attention of Pierre Dumoulin, a Belgian singer/songwriter, who began writing songs with her voice in mind before they even met. When put in touch, the two artists immediately connected and their teams began to collaborate. The duo paired up with producer Tim Bran, known for his work with London Grammar, Aurora, Birdy, among others. The final result was City Lights, an adventurous yet accessible pop track, set with a haunting chorus. With a strong yet fragile voice, the song is modern and contemporary, forming an exciting and striking debut single.

Things you should know about Blanche

What are the three most interesting aspects about your entry?

City Lights was not written for the Eurovision Song Contest, it was supposed to be a four minute long atmospheric track. When proposing the track to the jury, we were sure that the track would not be chosen, as other great artists sent amazing Eurovision songs. The words City and Lights were the only actual English words that were sung on the first demo, which was written in imaginary language.

What are the three most impressive facts about you?

I can move one of my toes telepathically

Do you have a (lucky) routine before you go on stage?

I speak the lyrics of the song in my head to focus on the story and be able to deliver the right mood.

Why is the Eurovision Song Contest important to you?

It is a unique chance to show who I am in front of such a huge and diverse audience. We are a small country and we often struggle to be seen. The Eurovision Song Contest is definitely the best place to have our (my) voice heard!

About the composer & song writer

Writer and singer songwriter Pierre Dumoulin is mainly known as the leader of the band Roscoe, which won Best Belgian Album of the Year in both 2012 and 2015. When he saw Blanche (Ellie Delvaux) auditioning for The Voice Belgium he decided to being composing and writing for others. He fell for her fragile and melancholic voice and decided to meet her. They immediately got along and Pierre wrote City Lights the next day.

Lyrics of City Lights

All alone in the danger zone
Are you ready to take my hand?
All alone in the flame of doubt
Are we going to lose it all?

I could never leave
You and the city lights
I could never beat
The storm in your eyes
The storm in your bright eyes

All alone in the danger zone
Are you ready to take my hand?
All alone in the flame of doubt
Are we going to lose it all?

Love came in between
The space in the city lights
Only I receive
The stars in your eyes
The stars in your dark eyes

All alone in the danger zone
Are you ready to take my hand?
All alone in the flame of doubt
Are we going to lose it all?

Let’s put some light into our lives
But keep the storm that’s in your eyes
Let’s put some light into our lives

All alone in the danger zone
Are you ready to take my hand?
All alone in the flame of doubt
Are we going to lose it all?
