History
The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the longest running television shows in the world. It was on the 24th of May, 1956, that Europe saw the first ever Eurovision Song Contest. After 56 runnings, the contest is one of the most typical European traditions and without doubt, Europe's favourite TV show!

At the recent Reference Group meeting in Baku, it was pointed out that this year, even though it is 57th edition of Europe’s Favourite TV Show, the winning song is scheduled to be the 60th song to hold the title of Eurovision Song Contest winner. The discrepancy between the number of winners and contests is all down to the four-way tie that occurred in the 1969 contest. Now that is all set to change, as the EBU is set to decide once and for all an outright winner of the 14th contest that took place in Madrid.

Over the coming weeks, in the build up to the 2012 contest, Eurovision.tv will be delving in to the archives to reminisce and remember some of the most pivotal and landmark moments in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest. Today we look at events of 52 years ago, when the BBC staged the first of their record breaking eight contests, and recall the 1960 contest.

Helga Vlahović who was one of the presenters of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1990 has died today at the age of 67. She was a journalist, as well as a producer, and her career spanned five decades in both the former Yugoslavia, and the current nation of Croatia.

The death has been announced of conductor Noel Kelehan, who was not only the most prolific conductor in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest, but also the most successful, by taking the baton and conducting no less than five of the winning songs from Ireland. In addition to conducting for Irish entries, he took charge of the orchestra for several other countries whilst in his role as Music Director of five contests staged in Ireland.
