SVT, the Swedish national broadcaster, has just announced that 3440 songs - a new record! - have been entered for the incredibly popular national final Melodifestivalen which serves as the country's selection for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest.

The number of the entered songs in Sweden's Melodifestivalen has reached a new record as 3440 songs had been received within the time frame given by Swedish broadcaster SVT. Until the 23rd of September, songs could be entered and the Swedish public did so in masses as last year's record of 3434 songs was topped again this year! SVT expects that some more songs could still come in because some envelopes sent within the time frame given might be delayed and could arrive at the Swedish broadcaster's offices in the next few days still.

Melodifestivalen is the most watched show on Swedish television every year with approximately 4 million Swedes watching the exciting final which usually takes place in Stockholm's Globen Arena. Lots of the 32 songs that reached the semi-finals in the previous years have become big hits in the Swedish charts and this year's compilation CD was awarded 6 times platinum!

In the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest, Sweden was represented by Charlotte Perrelli - who had won the contest in 1999 - with the song Hero which only reached a disappointing 18th place in the final in Belgrade.
