Andrew Lloyd Webber to compose the UK entry

The BBC announced today (October 18, 2008) that Andrew Lloyd Webber has agreed to compose the United Kingdom entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009. He will now embark on a nationwide search for the singer or group that will perform his song.

Eurovision-wannabes will be invited to send their auditions to the BBC website – before the closing date of 21st of November 2008. The search is open to all artists both amateur and professional. Entrants will be scrutinised by Andrew and a team of music industry professionals, who’ll then decide on a shortlist of six finalists. He and his experienced team will be able to pick and mix the artists in order to put together the best acts. Once Andrew has seen the various artists he will begin work with a top lyricist and record producer to create the song for Eurovision.

The battle to represent the UK will climax in a series of live shows Your Country Needs You on BBC One, hosted by Graham Norton, where the viewers will have the final say on who will pick up the baton for the country in the Eurovision extravaganza being held in Moscow next May.

Andrew Lloyd Webber says: “In my life I have never shied away from the impossible and this looks like the biggest mission impossible of all time, but with the might of the BBC and the British public behind me (not to mention Graham Norton) who knows what will happen? Win, lose or draw, I am looking forward to every minute of it and I hope everyone has a fun time along the way.”

Jay Hunt, Controller BBC One said: “I am thrilled Andrew will be championing the country's search for a star to storm this year's Eurovision.”

Elaine Bedell, Controller Entertainment Commissioning said: “I'm delighted that Andrew's agreed to step up to the mighty challenge of restoring some pride in our musical entry to this much loved national event. It certainly needs his passion and vision, and we can't wait for the search to begin!”

Andrew Lloyd Webber is a highly successful composer whose works include the musicals Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom of the Opera and Evita.

This is great news at last the bbc is taking eurovision more seriously. The UK selection has been very slowly getting better over the last few years, where it was swapped from a complete waste of time on a Sunday afternoon, to prime time saturday night viewing, but this is a huge leap forward with a whole month dedicated to it and with Sir Andrew LLoyd Webber backing it, the ratings should go wright up. its perfect family entertainment and is loved (secrectly by some) with a good song we stand a chance in Moscow...

This is now our time to shine. Top 5 or 10 would be brill. Love it if we won, and with juries coming back, it should be more fairer.

This is incredibly positive for the United Kingdom... a world famous name to produce and write our entry and a month of shows for the viewing public to enjoy and really get worked up...

We may not win but as long as we get a Top 5 or 10 position i'll be glad! This might help to rekindle the British public's love for Eurovision ;-)

Atleast we now seem to be taking it more seriously than a 1 night show where we can only choose from a few.
but now we have a proper show!!!!!

I would also like to see the UK return in the top 10, winning it would be a big surprise. We will have to wait and see!

I can't wait to see how this turns out. Top 10 position for UK, please, that's all I ask.

... but there is more!
