Bratislava,Slovakia -

Slovakia will be represented in the Eurovision Song Contest again this year, after ten years of absence. Tonight, the Slovak entry was selected in a joint vote of an expert jury and televoting - it's the duo Kamil Mikulčík & Nela Pocisková! They will sing Leť Tmou, which can be translated as Flight Through The Darkness, in Moscow.

For its first participation in the Eurovision Song Contest since 1998, the Slovak public broadcaster STV organised a great national selection this year, including five semi-finals, to find a worthy representative. A total of 50 songs - all in Slovak language - were presented in the five semi-finals. In each of them, two finalists were picked by televoting and another one by the decision of an expert jury. A sixteenth finalist received a wildcard by the jury: Samo Tomeček, singing To Čo Chceš.

Tonight, the final was broadcast live from the STV studios in Bratislava, with the winner being decided by a combination of televoting and the verdict of an expert jury. A lot of ballads and rock songs were presented tonight, and the public got to see quite some pyrotechnical effects on stage as well. This was the order of appearance:

  • VIP - Hviezdy
  • Andrea Zimányiová - Prines Si Ten Kľúč
  • Robo Šimko & MassRiot - Môj Anjel Spí
  • Zachariáš Hubáček - Bolo Bolo
  • Martina Schindlerová - Krídla
  • Mukatado - Ja Sa Mám
  • Tomáš Bezdeda - Každý Z Nás
  • Robo Opatovský - Prší
  • Smola A Hrušky - Na Čom Záleží
  • Peter Bažík & Andrea Sulovská - Nebudem Stáť
  • Janais - Taram Ta Rej
  • Mária Čírová - Búrka
  • Kamil Mikulčík & Nela Pocisková - Leť Tmou
  • Michal Chrenko - Proti Prúdom
  • Komajota - 7 Nocí
  • Samo Tomeček & Free Inna Cage - To Čo Chceš

During the interval act, several 2009 Eurovision Song Contest representatives from other countries performed their entries. Among them were Aysel & Arash from Azerbaijan, who presented their song Always to the Slovak public. Gipsy.cz, the representatives of the neighbouring Czech Republic, were also present, and they performed their song Aven Romale, one of the songs of the Czech national selection for the Slovak public.

In the end, the results of the televote were announced - the top three songs were:

  1. Kamil Mikulčík & Nela Pocisková - Leť Tmou - 25 %
  2. Tomáš Bezdeda - Každý Z Nás - 15 %
  3. Mukatado - Ja Sa Mám - 14 %

Those three acts were evaluated by the professional jury again, who decided that Kamil Mikulčík & Nela Pocisková should represent Slovakia in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest with Leť Tmou. The duo had already won the fifth semi-final of the Slovak national selection ahead of their concurrents. Kamil Mikulčík is a 31-year old actor, who also sings in the a cappella band Fragile. However, for his participation in the Slovak final, he temporarily left his band and teamed up with 17-year old Nela Pocisková, who is studying to become an actress as well. Soon she will also star in the musical West Side Story. You can watch a video clip of Kamil & Nela's Eurovision Song Contest entry here:

Slovakia decided to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 1993 with the Band Elán and their song Amnestia Na Neveru, but, at that time, did not qualify in the Eastern European qualification round. Thus, the first "real" Slovak entry in the Eurovision Song Contest was Nekonečná Pieseň by Martin Ďurinda & Tublatanka, who reached the 19th place in 1994. Two years later, Marcel Palonder achieved the best Slovak placing in the Eurovision Song Contest to date - he came 18th with Kým Nás Máš. 1998 saw the last participation of Slovakia in the Eurovision Song Contest for more than ten years, when Katarína Hasprová came 21st with her song Modlitba. This year, Slovakia will be represented in the Second Semi-Final of the Eurovision Song Contest, to take place on May 14th in Moscow.

I think this song is good, but too complicated and bit "affected" for the Eurovision... I would choose from the slovak eurovision one of these songs: Janis-Taram Ta Rej - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0nqhf5Nz0Y, Maria Cirova - Burka - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOeO2ux0sWM.
Good Luck!

I don´t like her screaming at the end. The song is nice at the start, but the end is... horrible. I hope she will do something with that.
Ale aj tak. Dúfam, že sa umiestnime aspoň v prvej desiatke! :)

Good luck Slovakia! sorry but the best songs this year are from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark and the United Kingdom and only one of these three states would have to win Eurovision!

Hi everybody. I hope the show in Moscau will be not only about business and politics but more about quality of music. Slovak song is pretty hard-made project. It is not only song...it is also action and sense. If you understand you will know what I mean. Eurovision could be more about good songs and texts not about rubbish and fast made vastage. VIVAT Slovakia and good LUCK.....We do not have to win..we show them perfect show.

I must agree Occasiary its very very good and mature translation. And a comment to Shaz. I work for an international organisation and i travel a lot. Everytime i am abroad i try to promote Slovakia as much as possible, because most of the foreigners have no idea about it. So when you are commenting in such a way it makes me feel a bit sorry for you. You could write that although you dont like the song u wish it a good luck, because u didnt insult just the song but also majority of Slovaks that voted for it. And about the growing up...i wanted to tell u the same... :)))))
