Lisbon,Portugal -

Portugal has chosen a band named after a heraldry symbol, Flor-de-lis to represent the country at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. Will their act be as symbolic?

The call for songs held by RTP for the Festival da Canção 2009 was open to the public. However, only songs by Portuguese composers were allowed, and all of the songs had to be performed in Portuguese. A total of 393 entries were received, from which an expert jury selected the best 24 songs. From 19 to 30 January people from around the world voted for their favourite songs on the competing 24 songs over the Internet, twelve entries qualified for the grand final.

During the final, the voting was decided by a mixture of televoting and jury voting, with a 50% share in the outcome for both groups. The votes were awarded from each region of Portugal.

In the end it was Flor-de-Lis with the song Todas As Ruas Do Amor winning the three-hour spectacle. You can see their entry below.

Based on popular Portuguese music

The beginnings of Flor-de-Lis are closely linked to Pedro Marques´ participation as a percussionist in the "Adufe” project, first conceived by José Salgueiro as an attraction for Expo-98, and which focussed on traditional Portuguese instruments.

The current repertoire consists not only of original lyrics by Pedro Marques and Daniela Varela, but also poems by many other. The sound is based on popular Portuguese music, from fado to folk, but the end result also stems from the fusion of music from other continents, with a strong popular flavor.

The vocals of Daniela Varela can be heard alongside Pedro Marques on percussion, Jose Camacho on guitar, Jorge Marques on cavaquinho, Paulo Pereira on flute and Ana Sofia Campeã on accordion.

Portugal will perform sixteenth in the first Semi-Final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow. You can read more about them here.

Will their unique sound astonish Europe? Tell us below!

xrigro for you, each country has its culture and its traditional music, Eurovision and was created for this purpose. But, as Greece wants to be superior to the traditional, takes pop songs and common day-day to a festival ... (this has nothing against Greece, is only a reaction to a comment without fully fit). for those who do not like, do not vote!

Let's hope that, after the big "Vânia Revelation" of the true power of Portugal (in ESC), this year we will have a better score and position at the finals!
Good luck Daniela and all of Flor-de-Lis! :)

I went to Flor de lis' concert yesterday! it's completly speechless.. they have BEAUTIFUL songs. LOVELY. just perfect portuguese songs of the world they just became my favourite portuguese band, without any doubt, cause listening to all those live songs makes you feel them a lot and it's such a nice positive vibe. sometimes sweeter, sometimes stronger. but always powerful congratulations Flor de lis! After your concert, I am sure we don't need much lights, nor make-up.. if you bring that feeling you had and shared on stage, there is NO WAY you won't charm and give the best possible to win this contest I am so proud and confident now.. Europe.. await all this love from Portugal cause you ain't seen it yet and you're gonna love it! ***

Hello! I like so much that song! I'm very proud pf Portuguese choice! It's a traditional song, but not only! It's very actual and have one lovely poem...
I believe we will have difficult to come to the final, but I don't care... Portugal is a great country and have lots of amazing musics. If European people dislike I can't do anything about that but it's a shame!

and portuguese are not the only ones to know that feeling. turists know it, too. they know that feeling of wanting to come back.it's unique. There's nothing like Portugal and there's nothing like a portuguese production (book, music, dance). it may be the best and it may not be better than others, but it is portuguese and that is something you know and feel just like that. I guess most countries can't really say that, can they? and still, I don't hate other countries. I don't think, reluctantly that Portugal is THE best country. I love Slovenia, I love the UK, I love Germany, I love Italy, Greece was nice, too. I bet a lot of people will know what I am talking about. it's simple. Portugal is..... Portugal (continues on the next comment)

Portugal is a bit like Slovenia, in one way: the ugly duckling. one of the western europe. one of the eastern europe. truth is that I have been to A LOT of countries in Europe and Slovenia was, by far, the best surprise. I mean, yes, Italy had a LOT of things to see. all the art stuff Venice and Firenze and so on. very beautiful. Greece had the famous Partenon and the Caryatides (already much more beautiful than the Partenon itself), but it was a disappointment in the whole. France had nice museums. still, Slovenia had something else, others didn't. something you can't get or work on. it's natural. and Portugal... Portugal is magic, just like Slovenia but even better cause it's hotter lol and it's not just the beaches. oh no. it's everything. I can't explain it in words. It has to be felt. Just one thing...

Everybody says, as far as I can see, that Vânia Fernandes was amazing last year. Well, if that's the case, why did all of you (voters) showed a little efansy with our song last year? If were that amazing why did almost all eastern countries nul points in the Final.

We portugueses are starting to feel hated by Europe in this Contest, you don't show any consideration to our efforts. We send almost every years amazing songs and what does happens? Or we don't even pass the Semi-FInal or, if we pass, we stay in the bottom scoreboard.

I just needed to say this, sorry to everyone who did really in fact support Portugal last year.
