Chisinau, Moldova -

Tonight, the Moldovan representative for the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest has been chosen in a public national final out of 25 entries. A 50/50 combination of televoting and the verdict of an expert jury was used to find the lucky winner: It's Zdob şi Zdub! They will represent their home country in Düsseldorf with So Lucky, a both funny and powerful song with ethnic elements.

Sunstroke Project & Olia Tira, the Moldovan representatives in the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest, had the honour of opening tonight's national final. The show was presented by Gabriel Coveșeanu and Dianna Rotaru, and it featured several funny and extraordinary performances: Cristina Scarlat wore a dress which included a huge skirt, and backing artists in spiderman costumes danced around her.

Natalia Barbu, who had already represented Moldova in the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest, performed her jazzy song in a setting reminding of the 1920s, and the viewers even got to see a staged bank robbery in the end! In the performance of the nostalgic and powerful ballad of the band Milenium, a small doll was used to express the sad feelings expressed by the lead singer.

In the interval act, Poli Genova, the Bulgarian representative in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest, presented her song Na Inat to the Moldovan public, and Hotel FM from Romania also promoted their Eurovision entry. After that, the full result of tonight's national final was announced. Here is the complete line-up (in order of appearance, winner in bold):

  • Natan - Dacă Dragoste Mai E

The televoting results showed a clear favourite of the TV public: Karizma gained a massive 36% of the total votes, and thus the maximum of 12 points. However, the jury decided to give her only 1 point, which put Zdob şi Zdub in first place, having reached the second place and thus 10 points from both the jury and televoting.

Zdob şi Zdub already represented Moldova in the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest with an energetic song including elements of rock, pop, funk, and ethnic sounds. Their song Boonika Bate Doba, back then, was a funny and ironic song about a drumming grandma. Tonight they were back with another entertaining stage act accompanying their powerful entry So Lucky: While they were performing in adapted folk costumes including pointed black hats, a fairy was riding an unicycle in the background.

Will the European public like this extravagant piece of music? We shall see in May! Moldova will be represented in the first half of the Second Semi-Final of the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest, on May 12th.
