Tallinn, Estonia -

The national selection process, Eesti Laul 2012 got under way this evening in Estonia with the first semi final taking place. Five acts have qualified and put themselves one step closer to becoming the Estonian representative in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest.

Originally, 159 songs were submitted to Estonian broadcaster ERR. A professional panel narrowed this number down to 20 songs.

Eesti Laul 2012 will consist of two semi final shows of ten songs each, the performances of which are aired on tape format, although the shows themselves are live with all of the artists present. Five songs will qualify for the final of Eesti Laul from each semi final, meaning the final will be a ten song show.

The host of tonight's show was Piret Järvis of Vanilla Ninja fame.

In both the semi finals and final, the results will be decided by a 50/50 split between public televoting and a jury vote.

Tonight's line up was as follows (Qualifiers in bold):-

  • Janne Saar - Fight For Love
  • Erasmus Rotterdamist - Kuu Pääle
  • MIA - Bon Voyage
  • Milky Whip - My Love
  • Pop Maniacs - I Don't Know
  • Ott Lepland - Kuula
  • August Hunt - Tantsulõvi
  • Soundclear - A Little Soldier
  • Liis Lemsalu - Made Up My Mind
