Rome, Italy -

The Italian broadcaster RAI just made the official confirmation that Italy will be represented in the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest by one of their most popular artists, Emma. She has been the biggest selling female artist in her country in 2013.

Since Italy returned to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2011 they've used their popular Sanremo Festival to pick the artists or songs that would represent them in front of Europe: Raphael Gualazzi, Nina Zilli and Marco Mengoni, all finished in the Top 10.

This year RAI, the Italian national television, has decided in an internal selection that the act that should represent them in Copenhagen is the successful female artist Emma.

Who is Emma?

Emma Marrone, born in Florence in 1984, started singing as a child. She recalls listening to Mina or Take That, whithout having any particular idols. It wasn't until 2010 that she made her breakthrough in the talent show Amici, which she won, and since then her career can be summarize in hit after hit achieving several gold, platinum and multiplatinum discs for the sales of her music and other accolades of the Italian music industry.

In 2013 she released her third album Schiena, which was the 5th biggest selling album of the year and the top selling by a female artist. Besides Italy Emma is also popular in Switzerland.

Even though she hasn't been chosen from the list of artists participating in the 2014 Sanremo Festival, coincidentally, Emma came second in Sanremo in 2011 in a collaboration with the band Modà and the song Arriverà. She won the festival on her own the following year with Non È L'Inferno.

Italy will air both Semi-Finals of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest, in RAI4 on the 6th and 8th of May, and the big Final on RAIDUE on the 10th of May, when Emma will participate. The song that Emma will perform in Copenhagen hasn't been confirmed yet.

Emma is the most famous young Italian singer. But she remained a simple girl. Emma lives for the music not for the fame. She is the smile for million of fans. This is Emmanuela Marrone. ♥ report to the moderator

I really like RAI's choice this year :) But I don't like the fact that we can't choose our representatives like in other countries... Maybe also in Italy should be organised a national selection show with a televoting system... I really hope that in the future this will happen. report to the moderator

Yes, good choice. I wonder why she had not been chosen when she won Sanremo in 2012. She has talent, though sometimes she sounds a little "intellectual", and not always her songs have an immediate positive impact. Nevertheless, as Italian, I feel well represented. Good luck, Emma! report to the moderator

Nah, Roma aveva già ospitato l'evento nel 1991, meglio Milano oppure Torino, o ancor meglio Venezia. :)

I lived in Italy 7 years and ive been watching Emma in her begings on the talent show "Amici".. she doesnt have only a great talent as an artist but she is an wonderful woman. She won her battle against cancer when she was only 26. She is very modests... but even more.. her music speaks to your heart. I hope she wins.

Photoshop. Well, I don't know what to think about Italy's choice. Emma's voice is "scratchy" and also powerful, but will the song be good enough? Will the song be a song that people is going to remember and vote for? And she seems a bit "difficult"... not easy to embrace... or how should I describe it? report to the moderator

The real thing that I'd like to see would be a serious competition to select our representant. I don't like internal selections, it's just unfair to submit a song without the audience opinion. But unfortunately we are not able to do that with the current voting system of Sanremo. This voting system allows some artists such as Emma or other ones like her that have "loyal" fans to gain "easy" votes and to win easily, because lots of their fans decide to vote them even if they haven't listen to the song yet, just because "it's her". It's sad that we don't have our national selection. :( report to the moderator

I really hope that this year our country could win. She's famous here and you're right with this, but what we don't know is if it's the same with what european people thinks about her. I have read the other comments below, and it seems that Emma is well received, but i think this is not enough. report to the moderator
