Riga, Latvia -

The decision of the Latvian public broadcaster LTV to allow foreign songwriters to enter songs for the 2013 national selection yielded a new record since 2008: No less than 122 entries were submitted! Now an expert jury will pick the finalists, to be announced on 11 December.

2008 was the last time Latvia qualified for the Final of the Eurovision Song Contest to date: Back then, Pirates of the Sea (pictured) reached the 12th place in Belgrade with their cheerful act . It was also the last time foreign songwriters were welcomed to enter their songs for the national selection of the Baltic country.

For the 2013 national selection, this rule has been implemented again, yielding as much as 122 entries that were submitted in the open competition till the deadline. However, the performers on stage still have to be Latvian citizens.

A professional jury will now listen to all the potential entries, and on 11 December, the 24 songs to be represented in the national semi-finals, to take place on 8 and 9 February, will be released during a press conference. The Latvian national final will be broadcast live from the city of Ventspils on 16 February.

I liked Latvia's 2010 entry with Aisha, but the live version wasn't so good so I can see why it failed to qualify. In 2012, the main issue was with the performance and lyrics, in my opinion. In 2011 though, I don't understand why Latvia didn't qualify for the final, Musiqq's "Angel in Disguise" was a good song with a modern sound. I hope Latvia qualifies for the final in 2013, preferably with a song in Latvian but I will be ok with whatever they send as long as it's good :) report to the moderator

I think Latvian entries are kinda good. They just need a lil "oomph". report to the moderator

I think Latvia needs to send a good vocal this year, if they want to get into the finals. Like, Aisha had such a great song in 2010 but it was the vocal that ruined it back then. This year, I think, it was also the mediocre live performance that stopped Latvia from qualifying...

Best of luck from Lithuania :) report to the moderator

LTV Eirodziesma 2012 (Latvia national selection for Eurovision); had a weaker group of songs compared to other national selections. Few songs really stood out from the group. I hope allowing foreign writers will improve its chances of qualifying for the Eurovision final. report to the moderator

well, I guess the decision to bring international writers is a step in the right direction.
To me, though, Latvia's biggest problem in 2012 was the Jury, who eliminated the strongest songs before the Semi Finals! report to the moderator

    C'mon Latvia!!!
I know Latvia can do it, and get back to the finals, I really enjoyed the pirates in 2008, but to me, I also liked all their entries from 2009-2012 where they didn't qualify.
2009 & 2010 were actually good, but was bad live, sadly
2011, is still a surprise for me, that song was my favorite in 2011 of all the entries.
2012 was also good, and she could sing nicely enough, but the lyrics was ridiculous.
I would so be happy to see 1 of my favorite ESC countries back in the final!!!

In 2013 Latvia, please send the Mad Show Boys!!! report to the moderator
