Malta: PBS call for entries for 2013
Maltese broadcaster PBS have begun the process of finding their entry for the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest. Authors and composers have until 31st October to submit their entries for consideration for the Maltese national final.
Kurt Calleja took Malta to the Grand Final of Europe's Favourite TV Show in Baku, back in May. This was the first time that Malta had appeared in the Final since 2009.
Hoping to build upon this success, PBS have released the rules for submission of entries for the 2013 national selection.
International songwriters invited
Authors and composers do not need to be Maltese nationals to enter the national selection, however solo artists do need to be Maltese nationals, or hold dual citizenship, one of which is Maltese.
As for multiple artist entries, the lead performer(s) must be Maltese nationals or again hold dual citizenship, one of which is Maltese.
The deadline for submitting entries will be 31st October 2012. The songs will go through an elimination phase whereby a judging panel will listen to CD versions of the entries and whittle them down to a final 24 songs.
Artists who have represented Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest from 2008 to 2012 are not eligible to enter the 2013 national selection. This means that Olivia Lewis, who represented Malta in 2007 could enter again if she wishes.
Final phase of selection
The 24 songs which qualify to the televised stage of the competition will be announced in late 2012. The format will be the same as this year, a semi final show will be held where a combination of jury and televoting will determine which 16 songs progress to the final.
In the final itself, again a combined vote from juries and televoting will decide who wins the Maltese ticket to the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest.
The televised semi final and final will take place in either January or February. The date has yet to be confirmed but Eurovision.tv will bring you details as soon as we have them.
