Malmö, Sweden -

Finally today it was time for one of the most popular national selections in Europe to kick off: the Swedish Melodifestivalen. Last year's Eurovision Song Contest host city, Malmö, was the place were YOHIO and Ellen Benediktson won their access to the final.

The venue for last year's Eurovision Song Contest, Malmö Arena, played host for the first semi-final of Melodifestivalen, the Swedish national selection for the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest, where the following eight acts battled for their ticket to the final:

  1. YOHIO - To The End (Andreas Johnson, Johan Lyander, Peter Kvint, YOHIO)
  2. Mahan Moin - Aleo (Mahan Moin, Anderz Wrethov)
  3. Linus Svenning - Bröder (Fredrik Kempe)
  4. Elisa Lindström - Casanova (Ingela "Pling" Forsman, Bobby Ljunggren, Jimmy Jansson)
  5. Alvaro Estrella - Bedroom (Jakke Erixson, Jon Bordon, Lauren Francis, Kristofer Östergren)
  6. Ellen Benediktson - Songbird (Sharon Vaughn, Johan Fransson, Tim Larsson, Tobias Lundgren)

Of course Helena Paparizou won the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest for Greece with the song My Number One. She also represented Greece in 2001 as part of the duo Antique with the song Die For You which placed third in Copenhagen, where the next Eurovision Song Contest will take place.

Sylvester Schlegel represented Sweden at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest as part of the band The Ark. Alvaro Estrella was one of the backing singers for Azerbaijan's Farid last year in Malmö. YOHIO finished second in last year's Melodifestivalen with the song Heartbreak Hotel.

"Vi har ett resultat!"

After the first round of voting Alvaro Estrella, Mahan Moin and Sylvester Schlegel were eliminated. Then the final results were announced. YOHIO (pictured below) was the first one to be announced straight to the final in Friends Arena with his song To The End.

Then it was time to announce the two acts proceeding to Andra Chansen, the second chance round, to take place in Lidköping on the 1st of March:

  • Linus Svenning - Bröder
  • Helena Paparizou - Survivor

The second straight finalist was Ellen Benediktson (pictured below) with the ballad Songbird, which meant that Elisa Lindström and Casanova finished 5th and was eliminated.

The next semi-final will take place next Saturday in Linköping. The Swedish final will be on the 8th of March.

    YOHIO!?! Not again!
The only reason that everyone Thinks he's so special is because he dresses like a girl. He's an horrible singer and his song sucks too. report to the moderator

One more thing.. I think both YOHIO's and Ellen's songs are better than the songs that already has been chosen so far for ESC. So I'm not so worried about quality and taste. Go Sweden! report to the moderator

I've heard Helena's, Yohio's and Ellen's songs and all three sound decently, but kind of average. I prefer Survivor from these. report to the moderator

Ellen was so great! No chance for Helena because we missed all of the fire she had in former years.
It was no great semifinal, but it showed that there is still a bit od musical taste left in this world. A very good singer with a strong ballad went straight to the final - this is something to enjoy, this doesn't happen every year. report to the moderator

Either Linus Svenning – Bröder or Helena Paparizou – Survivor should have qualified for the final. Ellen Benediktson – Songbird, the best song of this semi final. report to the moderator

I'm so sad that Álvaro is out :'( I'm sorry for him!.
According to the live and full songs, the finalists that deserved to be Helena & Álvaro or Ellen!.
2nd chance for Mahan Moin & Álvaro or Ellen.
I liked Yohio's voice he sings well live, but he's too overrated! :/
Survivor was fantastic. I loved Álvaro's show and Mahan, I liked her a lot!. Songbirds is a beautiful song, sound like a winner, a masterpiece she's so fresh! And looks like Dev! xD So I don't agree with results.
Casanova instead of bedroom! :/ Let's wait to next semi final... Broder is a good song but is forgettable is very repetitive. report to the moderator
