Hilversum, the Netherlands -

Today at the Wisseloord Studios in Hilversum, AVROTROS announced that The Common Linnets (Ilse DeLange and Waylon) will represent the Netherlands at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen.

Ilse DeLange and Waylon are definitely not unknown on the Dutch music scene both having made a big impact throughout the years.

Today it was announced by broadcaster AVROTROS that the two have joined together to form The Common Linnets and are poised to represent the Netherlands at Europe's favourite TV show in May.

It was also announced that the song will be presented at the beginning of March. Below you can find some more information about this exciting duo.

Ilse DeLange

Born in 1977 in Almeno, the Netherlands, Ilse DeLange has had a long and successful career both at home and abroad. Of her seven studio albums, six of them have peaked at number one in the Dutch charts, with her debut album World of Hurt in 1998 and her 2008 album Incredible going five times platinum. She also had number one hits with the singles So Incredible and Miracle in 2008 and 2009 respectively.

When speaking about this partnership, Ilse said: "Waylon and I have known each other since we made 'rootsy' music together as teenagers. This year we are working on an album in Nashville as a 'side project'. The Eurovision Song Contest was something we both individually considered but this joint venture is so awesome that we've decided to go it as a duo. I cannot wait for us to stand on the stage! As a child, watching the Eurovision Song Contest was a tradition in our family and I feel so honoured!"

Born Willem Bijkerk in 1980, Waylon rose to fame after participating in the reality TV show Holland's Got Talent in 2008 after which he had a Top 5 hit with his album Wicked Ways in 2009. He named himself after his idol, American singer Waylon Jennings and in 2001 even had the honour of joining his tour in the United States after sending him a sample of his music.

Waylon said, "I am honoured to be embarking on this adventure with Ilse, who I have known for so long. The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the biggest events in the world and to stand there on its stage has always secretly been a dream of mine".

"We were in no doubt whatsoever"

Forming The Common Linnets, these two exceptional artists have joined forces to work on a new album and to represent their country at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest in Denmark next May. In fact, the two recently travelled to Nashville, Tennesee in order to prepare.

The spokesman at AVROTROS, Daniël Dekker is very excited that The Common Linnets will be waving the Dutch flag in Copenhagen: "It is unique that these two artists want to represent our country. We're talking here about some of the top singer/songwriters in the Netherlands, so when this opportunity presented itself we were in no doubt whatsoever. We fully expect Ilse and Waylon to make a big impression in Europe".

This year in Malmö, the Netherlands achieved something they have not managed since 2004 - to qualify for the Grand Final. This was thanks to Anouk, whose soulful ballad Birds helped her - not only into the Grand Final - but also to a very respectable 9th place with 114 points. The 2014 Eurovision Song Contest will take place at the B&W-Hallerne on Refshaleøen in Copenhagen on the 6th, 8th and 10th of May. The Netherlands will participate in one of the two Semi-Finals, a draw for which will take place in January.

Heard this song in the first semi-final on the 06/05/2014, and if it doesn't WIN life is just NOT fair!

lse and Waylon a fantadtic choice of the Netherlands. With them the Netherlands are goning for the Victory comin year. The combination of there voices is so extremely plesant. The sings they sing is from such a high standard. The chemistry between them is so good, you see they have a lot of fun and pleasure in what they are doing. Europe will reward that! report to the moderator

    Wrong again....
As I said the song is not yet announced, but they made some songs they are releasing on CD already (and that's why none of these will make it into the contest as that's against Eurovision rules). The song is about to be announced next year, so there is no way the Belgian radio can know which song it is, unless you actually believe the 'teletijdmachine' from the Suske and Wiske stories (in UK English they are called 'Spike & Suzy' for the English readers) is real.
And that it most likely would be country style or strongly country influenced is no surprise, when you know these artists.
Look I didn't say they won't come up with a boring song now, but the song has NOT yet been decided, if the Belgian radio claims otherwise than it's a false claim (which would really disgrace them, and they don't want to risk it, I deem them smarter than that), so there is no way at all you can tell at this point how good or bad the song will be! report to the moderator

I think people are unfair when they say it won't qualify, the song hasn't even been released yet?. Until we hear the song we can't judge.

I think it's a good choice. Without knowing anything about them , other than they seem to play country/folk, I think it's a good and smart choice. There is actually a wave of folk music on right now, with acts such as "mumford & Sons", "The Band Perry", Taylor Swift, "Lady Antebellum" & similar. They have proven that folk music is now mainstream and the choice by the Dutch fits well into this.
I wish them luck, I hope they can qualify and bring a bit of good ol' folk into it! report to the moderator

Well, one thing is for sure; Ilse DeLange and Waylon will (just like Anouk did) take the Eurovision seriously. After years of embarassing and poor acts coming from this small country they finally know how to perform.

Although I do like country music, I wonder if this will really be catchy enough for the Eurovision. Somehow the Netherlands find it more important to be original than to create something that has potential to win.

Ilse and Waylon are great singers and are experienced with performing. Their commercial background gives them the ability to know what’s hot and what’s not. I really hope that they’ll choose something more up tempo than last years Birds. A good beat never hurt no-one!!! I can’t wait for them to reveal their song and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the Netherlands! report to the moderator

To my big embarrasment I must admit I never heard of Waylon.... Ilse de Lange however requires no introduction to me. I know she has what it takes to win this contest, so (aside from what the other contestants come up with), all that could go wrong is the wrong song.

Funny that you already know that the song is boring while the song itself is not yet announced. In fact it's very well possible it has yet to be written. You made a big fool of yourself with that remark. report to the moderator

Ilse represented the Netherlands in the International Song Contest: The Global Sound, an online world music competition. She got 4th place with her song Miracle. I think she can bring it home for gold for the Netherlands!! Best of luck! Favorite entry thus far! :D report to the moderator
